1996 Dyna Wideglide, Speedometer will stay on "0" for up to 10 seconds than jump to anywhere from 60MPH to 90 MPH. It doesn't matter if the bike is stopped or moving. Stays wherever it initially stops, just quivers rapidly with a 10MPH variable.
I have just changed out the Stator, voltage regulator and the starter. Now this speedo thing......
After all was said and done I found a 3/4" X 1.5" X 3" device under the seat that connects to the old turn signal wires (my bike has the turn signals removed.) Has (I believe) a brown and a blue hooked up. Also has a black wire on it. Black one isn't hooked up to anything. I'm "assuming" it is supposed to go to ground.
If I hold this black wire to ground the speedo still acts crazy.
I don't know if I removed the wire while working on the bike, if so I believe it could have been connected to a starter mounting bolt. I definitely wasn't attached to the grounding point under the seat 'cause the terminal is too small.
I have removed and cleaned debris from the speed sensor with no improvement.
Anyway, I'd appreciate if someone could shoot me towards some troubleshooting before I spring for a $300.00 speedo.
have you checked your battery connections?
the dealer could use the speedo tester to see if it's the speedo
or the speed sensor.
most of the time the speed sensor fails
and you ge no speedo/odometer.
Same year bike as you and exactly the same problem. All the experts I spoke with said it was the sensor down on the tranny. So I went to the stealership, paid 60 bucks and installed a new one. Waste of time and money. That was not the problem. I pulled the seat and dash and checked all the connections. Unplugged and replugged everything. Nothing. So its either the speedo itself that took the wild dump, or under the tank a wire wore through or broke. Haven't pulled the tank yet, thats this weeks project, but I suspect I will be buying a new speedo next week.
It just about drove me crazy trying to find out the problem with my 98 FXDWG speedo.. I had to replace the battery and while I had it disconnected I pulled every connection, pin and ground and used sandpaper on every one of them. Once I got it all put back together it worked and has worked fine since. Don't know which one took care of it, but it working is all that counted.
HDTech74, I've had all the battery cables off and in my hand while I was troubleshooting an intermittent starter problem. (Initially thought it was a solenoid/bad connection.) They are all clean and tight.
Does the speedometer have to be off the bike to use the speedo tester?
I think it has something to do with the turn signals being eliminated. Why else would there be a device hooked to the cut turn signal wires under the seat if not to simulate turn signals????
Bikerlaw-Please keep me posted.
MJ- I did have the Speedo off the bike for a while when I was running the voltage reg wire. Maybe something is not right at that connection.
Also, the odometer is blank all the time, but the trip meter displays and advances 0.1 miles every 100+ miles.....

My odometer was doing the same thing.
I pulled the plug from the ignition switch and cleaned those connections with sandpaper and used dielectric grease when I re connected it. I also removed all the ground wires from the bolt under the seat and cleaned them also. I wish I could tell ya exactly what fixed it, but can't. Sorry!
