Hi all, my first bike and I'm about 5000 miles. what should I ask or expect for the 5000 mile service from a Harley dealer? Should I change to synthetic oils?
It's really up to you on the oil. I have used synthetic 20-50 in all 3 of the Harleys Ive had in all the holes, never had any oil related problems. I always started the synthetic at 1000 miles. As for the service, I just had the 1000 mile and I supplied the oil 'Amsoil' dealer charged for labor, filter, and a gasket $164. I don't know if a 5000 would cost more or not. I'm going to do the 5000 myself... Good luck.
Spend your money on a shop manual instead of giving it to the dealer to do the simple things.
Even a retarded Monkey could handle changing the oil and filter.
Even buying the Manual and the tools to do the job it will cost you less this time and much less in the future.
At 20K miles you will have saved enough to buy a lift table to do the service on.
By the way, using quality synthetic oil like Royal Purple, Mobil 1 or Amsoil (my preferred brand) will help your bike run cooler and last longer.
Harley Davidson synth oil is overpriced crap.
I would deff make sure they chack and adjust the steering head.
make sure they give you the printout of what they do for a 5k service.
I've done all my own work on aything since I was a kid, was mostly out of
necessity because I raced MX when I was a kid and couldn't afford to bring things places so I learned.
Buy the service manual, it'll be the best $6o you ever spend on your bike.
Alot of very useful information in there.
I've always run conventional oil in my 1995 fatboy.
But for my 2010 dyna I''m going to try either redline or amsoil.
My friend is an amsoil dealer so I will prob go that way.
Although I've heard good things about the redline for the trans.
