So I have a couple buddys with sportys one is a 95' 1200 with lighting heads and not sure what else is done to it since he bought it used like this, the other is a 99' with 1340cc kit head work and cams.
I raced the 95 with lighting heads and unknown motor work and I take him till 3rd gear at about 3grand, then he smoked my *** like he hit the juice or something.
My bike is a 2009 street bob with the 96", has vance and hines big rad 2-2 and hi-flow ac with fuel pak dyno'd at 75hp and 90tq
So I decided to slide some cams in, I went with the woods tw-408-44 with a 4deg timing gear, putting them in this weekend. Was told this should get me around 90HP and 90-100tq with a better curve.
Will this be enough to take the 95' 1200 with the lightning heads and unknown motor work?
Also the 99 with the 1340 and the head work and cams says his builder said he should be around the 120hp mark??? Is that possible with a sporty??
Man I hate getting beat by a girls bike.....lol

You need to upgrade to the bigger pistons and jack the compression up to about 9.8:1 and get your heads done. then go have it dialed in on a dyno. Then go pick a race with him

Thats the plan as money allows big bore and head work, but for now all I can do is the cams. Just curious about his 120hp prediction, guess I will know for sure in a couple weeks going to JP open house gonna throw them both on the dyno and see whats really up.
Dont feel bad. My buddy has a 1200 Sporty with just pipes and he spanks me every time, even if I get the jump on him. Pisses me off until I remember that those "girls bikes" are lighter and faster than bigtwins...
Bad news first. Sportys with major motor work can be very quick...depending on drivers. On the surface id say you'll need more than just a cam. Good news, 120hp sportster? thinkin not!

Only a couple hundred pounds lighter, and I thought there was no replacement for displacement. I am rocking almost 1600cc and he is at 1200 to 1340cc WTF

Just dont seem fair does it, lol. Seriously though some stuff to consider, things like gearing on our late model Dynas is way too tall, and in my case rider weight, im over 200. Like some said you will have to put some $$ in to the motor especially if your running against a Sporty thats already got a built motor...
I really get it bad. My sons XR1200 will spank my dyna both top end and drag race, and really get me in the turns. I'm just glad he doesn't ride it well enough yet to embarrass me!

Well I will keep dumping the money in till I put both of them down. Have to do it as work and the wife allow. Would changing to a 30tooth help?
I don't understand. Why bother to race your Harley??? Here are some good options to go fast, very fast: 1000RR, ZX14, GSX-R1300, or 1198 (Brands withheld)..
