Gotcha. I don't have a parts manual, good luck and no problem. I'm sure there are a few guys wondering the same thing, maybe this will help them out too. Be sure to let us know if this works for you.
I would assume, (you know what they say) that it is 2 different data protocols, so I have serious doubts they will swap out.
Even if the ECM looked identical, the protocol could be different, you really need a MoCo engineer to explain this, hooking up the wrong thing could cost you an ECM.
Wiring is a piece of cake until they run data protocols.
Wish I had the definitive answer, but I think that should only come from someone that truly understands those things, hate to see you create more problems than it is worth.
Yep, if data protocols are different then it will defiantly not work. But if the parts numbers are the same for the ECM's then it should. I would think...
I wonder if this tach isn't picking up its signal directly from the computer (ECM)?
Stock HD tachs on bikes with ECM's do get the tach signal on the Data Bus, I learned this when I installed my Dakota Digital, that is why HD tachs are plug-n-play.
You can get a tach signal from the front cylinder coil if the tach you are hooking up will accept the signal, if it is a HD tach designed for the ECM, most likely that wont work.

That sounds logical, I would also check wiring diagrams for both bikes. Just to verify everything.
Airborne: Its got nothing to do with wiring. All pre 09 models are not equiped with the miles to empty function for the gas. Thats the only difference. I installed the combo tach/speedo you mentioned on my 08. First time i fired up it showed low fuel when i had just gased it up. I cut engine and fired up again and it was gone. Works perfectly on my 08. Had it for almost 2,000 miles now. Cheers!
Can't help with the wiring but I put one on my '10 Fat Bob a couple of weeks ago and its a real nice gauge, cheaper than the two-dial ones too. Display is large and easily readable and, of course, its a huge plus to gain a tacho. Only tiny downside is that the 6th gear indicator isn't that clear in sunlight - no biggie.
