As I have previously stated in prior posts, I am not mechanically inclined so I would like to ask for some input.
This weekend I connected a cable that came with my battery tender to the battery terminals. It was two rings, one for the +ve and -ve.
It had a fuse and i think the end connector is what is called a SAE connector. I plugged it to my battery tender and it worked fine.
Then, I got a SAE Socket Cable and I connected it to the cable going to my battery. I pluged my GPS and or Iphone and it was charging it.
I want to know if this is okay to do. I dont want to drain the battery. Please keep in mind that I will only charge my GPS/Iphone when I am at highway speeds.
I am attaching pictures of the parts that I used.
Sincerely,
Harlista01
P.S. I know this is basic just know that I am trying to learn.
Sounds good to me. When not running, you will drain your battery by the rate the iPOD or GPS draws power. The draw is so low compared with the battery capacity that it would probably take two weeks to drain off enough to be noticed. Your battery loses almost as as much power just sitting idle.
Yeah...I'd like to find a similar set up, my phone seems to last only 5 hours or so when I go out riding...might be a good thing though, I normally use it as my excuse when the wife trys calling all day!
My Garmin GPS came with a car charger and the cable was long enough to have it mounted on the handle bar. The charger for the GPS is USB based so it can plug into the same charger as the iphone.
Not really going for looks so the cable is over my gas tank to the handle bar. As long as it charges while i am riding i am fine. I wont been charging my gps or iphone all the time.
If i dont want the cables hanging I just wrap them and put them under the seat and fasten them. or put them in a small bag i carry on my motherwell solo rack.

Reason: Edited link and write up.
I use a similar set up, but I ran the line under the tank and up to my bars. I put a SAE connector on the pigtail from a cig lighter (acc. plug) and strapped it to the bars. Works fine. I have used my gps and charged my phone at the same time on a couple of long trips, never had an issue with the battery draining at all.
I bought a cig plug on eBay that plugs into the battery tender plug. I just plug my iPhone car charger into that when I need it. Plug was like $10 on ebay.
