Hey all. New here. just picked up a 2001 FXDP with the floorboards and want to switch over. The big question is: am I looking for both an inner and outer primary for this operation? I cannot see if the inner is going to work, but I suspect it won't. I know the outer may be different as well. Can anyone provide some advice here on this switch. I see that you can buy the peg brackets and brake and shifter linkage easily. Real issue is the shifter linkage and the primary stuff. Let me know what ones I am looking for. Thanks!
I'm currently in the process of doing this to my 2011 FXDF that came with forwards. Some things that I've learned about this, that might help:
- to go to MID from FWD you need to get primary cases that were intended for MID from the factory, and those exist on other bikes. In my case early Fat Bobs were available with MID as well, but that ended at some point.
- I've seen one example on youtube of someone getting their FWD cases machined to allow the holes for MID but that's definitely not what I'm doing
- in the past, the more popular option was to go to FWD but that seems to be changing, especially with Dynas. (this is based on very little information so take that with a grain of salt, but it seems that way to me)
- to go from FWD to MID, you have the option to just plug your holes, and not mess around with new cases
- the MID and FWD inner and outer cases each have their own part number, so four total
- the inner case is way more expensive and more rare on eBay than the outer case
All that considered, I may be in for a hard time trying to find someone to trade cases with me, which is what I'm trying to do for now. Almost nobody going from MID to FWD would go to the expense of swapping cases when plugs are an option. If they wanted to do it for a cleaner look, they would be after nicer cases than my 40,000km ones because they're probably dealing with a nicer overall bike than mine. I went into this thinking I had the parts that were in demand, but now I'm not so sure.
