Hey guys I've got an '08 street bob and I'm wanting to run 16" wheels front and rear. I've got a 16x3 for the front that I'm going to lace to the stock hub. In the back I want to run a 16x5 laced to my stock hub. Since the fatbob runs a 16x5 I assume I won't have any clearance issues in the back, what do you think?
Also, when I have my hubs and wheel hoops powdercoated I assume I need to have them plug the spoke holes or are the holes big enough that I don't need to worry about it?
Thanks in advance for any opinions, this forum has really helped me with a lot of the mods I've done to my bike.
You need to consider the rear brake caliper clearance for when the pads need service. On mine the 16x5" rim makes it a real wiggle-waggle to get it off the support bracket. If the 08 SB & 08 FB rear brakes are the same, I'd say... you'll have no problem. I suspect they are, but I know the 07 SB is differant that the 08 FB.
Another consideration would be a comparison between the axil spacers used on the 'laced' wheel with those used on the 'cast' wheel.
My parts manual is in the garage, I'll take it to work this morning, do some bird doggin' for ya, then post up what I find.
Heck man I appreciate any help you can give me, I've looked and d asked but I can't find anyone running that setup. I think it will work but I would like some more feedback before I pull the trigger
I have done almost what you are talking about. I re-used my stock front rim, but the back I went to a stock 16" rim from a bagger. It was not a 5" width, but here is what I can tell you. I had to use the spokes from the orginal 16" rim and hub, but re-laced it to my hub. What I found doing this, is that the angle at which the orginal spokes are bent at is not enough, so I had to build a jig and bend them a bit more to get the angle corrected. After doing this, it went together, no problem. Now as for your powder coating, make sure you block off the holes!
Sounds great, hope the best and if I can be of any help, let me know.
Thanks for the feedback, I plan on buying a 16x5 hoop from a late model bagger and ordering the spokes form hdwheels. I'm pretty sure I can get the wheel together just not sure if it will fit when I get it done.
Talk to hogpro,hd wheels or black bike wheels and ask if that width rim will work on your street bob... One of them should have a chart to tell you it will or not
I did some more research and I found out that the swingarm, caliper mount and axle spacers are the same on both the fat bob and the street bob. So the only difference would be the profile of the wheel. I did some measuring on my bike and I'm pretty sure it will fit. I'm going to pull the trigger and I will post some pics when I get it together. Thanks for all advice.
