I took a 11/16 drill to my stock baffles and it really helped. My dad just bought some Rush slipon's for his 2011 Heritage Softail, and they sound raspy to me. I like my drilled mufflers better, deep rumble and sounds good when on the throttle.
I gotta disagree with Speedhitter when he says we must pollute half the world with our exhaust mods. My bike gets over 40 mpg which is better then 95% of the four wheeled vehicles on the road. Bikes only make up about 10% of the vehicles in America. Emission controls for us are stupid since our pollution is a drop in the bucket anyways
I live with myself just fine. I got rid of the thunderheader and put on V&H true duel head pipes and SE mufflers. Bike runs great in the RPM range I use 98% of the time.. It's a little louder than the factory mufflers, but still won't annoy my neighbors when I come home at midnight, or leave for work at 0 dark 30.
Plenty loud enough ot WFO, but a little consideration with the right hand keeps my neighbors happy - and less likely to support anti noise laws.
There was a time when I thought the louder the better, but I have grown up since then.
My 06 SB with stock mufflers sounded some akin to a weak Metric than a Harley and rather dis heartening when compared to my 883/1200 Sportster with cams, pistons 2-1 Pro Pipe and pushing 90 HP.
Ran across the Drill the Stock Baffles....gave that a try and it did sound better at idle but start rolling and all quiet agian.
Opted to try some take off Rush Slipons....okay now we are gettin some where and it sounded like a Harley.
After the SB engine build from 88 to 95 with cams/pistons the Rush just didn't have the sound I had expected...tech told me to call BCT and have a pair of baffles shipped to him and he would install them and take out the rush baffles....Now my bike sounds like I want it too and I am happy.
If my pipes offend you ya don't have to ride with me....no worries here. I moved to a town that on any given weekend in summer Mains Street half M/C traffic running through town.
I have heard a lot louder and no one here complains.

Hey, Fatbob, I was kidding about the emissions! My point was motorcycle noise is a none issue as is emissions. In Connecticut it is mostly the "rich" communities that do the complaining and it is mostly because they don't want bikes around period! I don't want to get into that to much because it really becomes a political issue.
I am a firm believer that there is a time to crank it and a time to idle through neighborhoods and towns. That is really the only issue with sound and there are idiots who screw it up for the rest of us. Touchy subject!
I have no issue with whatever pipes you run. Personally I like it quieter than some do. But I'm always amazed at how many people put loud pipes on just to see how quiet they can still drive through their neighborhood. I don't buy it. If you want loud pipes it's because you want to make noise, why not just say it!
