I first added the larger pegs to the forwards, then added heel rests, each were an improvement, but I was still fighting to keep my feet on the pegs at higher speeds. I finally just put floorboards on the forwards and find them to be the most comfortable.
If you can fit the mids, they ARE the way to go....Better handling when you can use your legs to weight the pegs, give extra cushion over bumps and in general give you more control.
+1 on mid pegs. I put forward controls on my ride, but kept mid-pegs on as well. This helps me a lot when my knees start acting up. Then when I want to stretch, I just kick my feet out onto my forwards and rest them on top. Having the different options certainly helps keep the knees happy. Plus, I just installed a new air cleaner that I won't have to bend my leg around to get comfortable. That will help as well.
how are you guys mounting the mid pegs on your bikes with the forward controls on there? i have an 08 Super Glide with forward controls, i'm 5'10" and on long rides i feel like my knees are killing me from not moving. i would love mid pegs to be about to transition to from time to time. i currently have heel rests up front on my pegs, but i'm seriously thinking of switching up to some mini floor boards under my forward controls
That's why I kept my mids, and just put regular highway pegs on it.
I can move around, change position, any time I want. It's like having two bikes in one!
I also like the mids if I'm in the mood for some back-road sporty stuff. Feels like my old '81 Yamaha XS Eleven...
BTW, I'm 6'4", with 52-year-old bad knees. Works for me...
This is a great example of how personal the set up of our bikes is.
I'm 6'0" (56 year old bad knees) - and I get cramps in my hip flexor muscles when I ride with mids. Going to be putting on my forwards later this week.
I had knee problems until I changed my stock seat for a mustang solo. The new seat pushed me forward about an inch and it was what I needed to be comfy on the forwards.
That said, I'm converting to boards as soon as I can, might be an option worth exploring for yourself.
