pre-reading the manaul to get ready to remove my 2010 WG rear wheel this weekend. in the manual it says to 'loosen adjuster on each side several turns to remove belt tension". it seems to me that to reduce belt tension you would have to tighten (turn right) which would push the axel forward...? am i off in my thinking?

Turning the adj nut clockwise actually pulls the axle and wheel to the rear of the bike, which increases tension on the belt. As the above posters noted, turning the nut counter-clockwise a number of times reduces tension on the belt to the point where you can slip it off the pulley and then remove the wheel. Taking the wheel off is relatively easy compared to putting back on, aligning it, and adjusting the belt tension. Good luck.
A lot of guys don't loosen the adjusters at all. If you don't loosen them, there will be no need to adjust the belt tension and align the axle. The axle may be harder to get out but it is worth a try. You can loosen them if you can't get the axle out without beating it up.
One last word...anti-seize.
