Switchback "ripoff"
I mentioned on page 1 there was no difference between the 96 and 103 manufacturing costs - certainly not enough to matter to the MoCo. Factor in (minus) the deleted chrome on the engine, which with today's EPA regs is expensive per bike, then the difference between the fat 41mm FL front end vs. the Dyna 49mm exposed forks which can't be much, add the difference in fenders, again, not much from a manufacturing cost point (not even hundreds), then add the cost of the bags and windshield and there you have it.
Even Harley's research and design for the bags can't be that much time and money. They are essentially 70's & 80's Shovel bags with a new (stupid) side latch. How many painstaking days can that take with 3D CAD ? Unlike computers or TVs or other electronic gizmos, Harley doesn't lower their price after recouping the design investment.
The only way there is $3,000 difference is market driven, demand, or in this case, what they think they can get.
Sad part is I like the bike, may even get one, but it pisses me off I have to add another grand to the cost to chrome the motor. Now we're in Road King territory that has cruise control available. As much as I like the FLD, that's my dilemna.
There was no comparison intended about what it would cost you to retrofit your current Dyna, that's a different deal.

Just got to see one of these babies at the dealer this past weekend. It seemed to attract alot of attention, so it looks like it will be a hit for MOCO. I think that is a good thing. Personally, not much appeal to me, just looked like a cheaper bagger, but then I am a Fatbob guy, and that may be Harley's intent. For the price, the RK with cruise control would be my choice. Glad that Harley does have a decent lineup that allows us to choose!
For those of you that want to know how the Floor Boards are mounted to the Dyna frame, here yea go! It took me about a minute to go and still this pic from the MoCo site. I am sorry to say that they only have a close up like this of the left side, but it does look like the right side is the same, it uses both the mid and forward control mounts. Now to just wait and see how much theis conversion is going to cost and if they will offer it in black.
Yep, 103, and the color matched hard bags. Also the new headlamp and shield set up is additional, as well as the fenders as mentioned.
However, as you pointed out:
Superglide $12,999.00
Good Bags $600.00
Good Shield $300.00
Tour Seat $350.00
Total $14,249.00
Add in a 103 kit and labor you might come in $1k less than the Switchback. So really, for $1k you are getting the whole design and color matched bags in a nice package and all removable.

You forgot the floorboards!
Geez. I spend all this time buying bags off ebay, getting the ghost brackets, restoring the bags and then poof!, Hd comes out with a decent set of hardbags for a dyna. I think I will wait for them to finally come out with a detatch fairing with stereo for the dyna. That should be next if they want to compete with the chinese.
Popped in to a local dealer today to check one out. I have a 2007 Low Rider which I've made into a kind of Dyna Road King; quick detach windshield, rigid leather locking bags, touring seat, quick detach sissy bar with rack and touring backrest pad, forward controls; and was interested how this one was out of the box. Although the overall package is visually appealing, I wouldn't get one. The effect is a 3/4 size (7/8?) Road King. The seating position is cramped for me (6'1"/32" inseam), the bags are small, single disc brake with no available ABS, and for not much more money, relatively speaking, you're in a Road King. I could see this being a hit for some one smaller in stature looking for a lighter weight, turn-key tourer. Meanwhile, I'll continue to save for some flavor of full size FL.
I don't know if it's a ripoff or not. But it's a lot cheaper than a Heritage, and, combining the ride-ability of a Dyna with a capacity for touring is awesome. Throw in a 103 in a Dyna, and it will have plenty of buyers.
