Just bought 04 super glide. It has forward controls. When the previos owner put them on he left the mid control lever on and it flops around. I want to remove it and replace the insp. Cover. Can someone tell me how. Thanks
There are parts avaiablr to do that. You would have to go to the dealer and, ask the parts staff to show you a parts listing for that particular year/model of forward controls. But, there is an alternate solution. some of the older mods for fwd controls simply had small "Z" bracket that bolted to the mid linkage and to under a bolt head at the bottom of the aft cyclinder to secure the linkage. I'd concider that to keep it simple. Otherwise you're looking at removing the inner primary cover to do the deed. Not a simple task. Probably at least 1 to 2 shop hours to get it done.... a 12 pack for you and your savvey buds to help you do it on a Saturday morning.
Anyway... best of luck with it and, I hope this was helpful for ya. And remember "Chrome won't get ya home"..... Tim
welcome to the forum. if you do a search for inner primary you will find all you need. as stated above in can be a pain in the a$$ if you have not done it before. buy a manual and it can help also. you have to swap both inner and outer covers.$$$$$$.

Some info below. I'm pretty sure you can just cut the shaft out, remove the inspection cover, plug the inner cover shifter shaft thru-hole, then install a Wide Glide inspection cover. Do a search and see if you can find someone who actually did this on a 2005 and earlier Dyna.
Removing the original shift shaft lever https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...d-control.html
Get a hacksaw blade and tape each end with duct tape, leaving about two inches exposed in the middle. Also put some duct tape on the primary and cylinder cooling fins. Tape a wrench on one end to get a better grip (on the end of the blade so as you pull on the wrench you will be on the cutting stroke of the blade). Slip the blade between the primary and engine from the bottom of the bike with the wrench end on the bottom. Position the shaft so you can cut about a quarter inch from the lever (not in the welded area). Use your other hand to guide the top of the blade as you cut. After cutting through, the shaft will slide right out, and the lever will just fall to the floor.

You could use a bracket to stop it from floping around as well.
Here's (see image below) how the (mid control) shifter lever shaft retainer bracket is bolted to the engine on my FXD 2003.
It's the "Retainer bracket, shift lever for 2001 and later models" p/n 34639-01
from the Floorboard kit 50601/01.
There is second "Primary shift lever retainer bracket" which is used on 1993-2000 models.
The p/n for this one is 34639-93; it comes from the "FXD CHROME FORWARD FOOT CONTROL KIT" p/n 49080-03A.
Thanx fxd2003 that's seems the best way to go. Also thanx to all. This is a great forum for info.
That is the same way as Harley Tim was describing. And I agree, that is the best way to go in case you want to someday go back to mids (which is what I did eventually with my FXD). Not sure if you have one, but there is even a fancy little chrome cover that you can put over the end of the original shifter shaft to clean up the appearance a bit. You can put a light coat of grease on the shifter shaft splines before putting the chrome cap on to keep them from corrosion.
