As it says guys i am in the middle of putting my new apes on the question is do i need to install a new Idle cable i an sure i have read some place on this site that it will be ok without ??
Oh I have a 09 FXDF (Fat Bob)
I don't run them ,havent for decades with zero problems. no need for them and they just clutter the bars . They wouldn't be there if it wasn't a sue for any reason country.
depending on your carb , you may have to space up the bracket that holds the cable to the top of the carb to get the slop out of the throttle cable. At least on SS carbs the idle cable pulls in the opposite direction enough at closed throttle to keep tension on the throttle cable, a couple washers under the bracket and the throttle cable is perfect though without the idle cable
Beacuse it looks SOOOOOOO much cleaner without when you have apes on the lees crap hanging from the bars the better IMO.
Will the EFI engine / throttle return ok without it though a accecpt the carbed engine will good point about using it as a spare throttle cable though if you have a problem.
never seen a throttle cable get "stuck" . If one ever did , I would think that by having a clutch / brakes / kill switch / ignition switch...that a person wouldn't be in any trouble.
if a person is that worried about a spare , a new cable would roll up tight and be easy to carry

I've always taken mine off too, but yesterday on the way to work the cable broke.20 degrees at 5:30 in the morning, 15 miles from the closest town Once I got it home, on a trailer no less, I found out the throttle sleeve was rolling past the housing and bending the cable back and forth enough that it only lasted about a month. I put 2 new cables on it and will probably just leave it be for now. Was looking at a few of Indian Larry's old bikes and thinking of trying to go more that route. His throttle cable is just run in the bars. Gonna check into that.
