What is this, a Prius forum? I didn't buy a Harley for gas mileage. I like to ride and enjoy myself. I can go out for a long all day ride on a tank. I don't worry beyond that. If I was concerned about mpg, I would buy a Honda Rebel.
Because the fuel tanks are relatively small, and "Full" is really kind of a relative term; measuring the fuel economy over a single tank will usually produce some fairly wide swings in MPG. This can alternately lead moments of anxiety and euphoria from one tank to the next, neither of which are truly justified.
can you spell "average"

Peoples have different interpretations of whats considered a "long all day ride". My .02: One tank of fuel wouldn't come close...
Spotted a thread on mileage under the Road King section so got curious.
On the Fat Bob, I'm doing 12.9 kms to the liter or 30.3 miles to the gallon. Compared to what the RK guys report, that's at the very low end, and they got the heavier bikes. What do you do?
You must be going wide open over there. Have any speed limits? I usually get 40 or so. Can make it get 30 but I need to massage the blood back in my fingers when I drive like that.

Whilst the speed limit is 120 kms/hr, all highway speed cameras are set at 140 kms/hr so 139 works. That's 86 mph. Not wide open but fast enough. Yes, does get tiring, but I got narrow bars with less than normal pullback, plus a full face helmet, that helps.

Maybe you should consider that rebel then. I'm not bragging that I do 450+ mile a day rides, but really, fuel mileage concerns on a Harley. It only costs $15 or a little more to fill it.
Fuel depends on where you are. I pay more in Dubai than you pay in the US. My holiday home and holiday car (about 18 miles to the gallon) are in Western Europe where a gallon costs between $ 6.5 and 7.5.

Well depends on how you calculate it. I reset the first trip meter at every fill up,then fill the tank as full as I can get,the divide fuel added to the tank by the kms ridden and voila.
To answer the question in the city I get on the throttle pretty hard. I try to get ahead of the cages to avoid possible injury by careless drivers and I get around 35mpg. Highway is an easy 45 mpg.
Throttle position can seriously affect fuel consumption and riding in too high a gear will ruin efficiency as well.
As long as I never twist pass 1/2-5/8s throttle it gets great mileage. As soon as hit 3/4 throttle I can watch the has guage fall.
