How are the Avon grips. You have the ones like this http://avongrips.com/shop/products/C...ed-Grips.html#
I was thinking of getting these. Are they soft and is the center rubber. I didn't want hard grips.

XJ I've ears that too but there is maybe a millimeter to work with between the metal collar and the bar. I don't have a compressor anyway.
Pontiac those are the grips I have. I love them. They are not as bulky as the stock grips. I rode sport bikes for 12 years before I bought a Harley an like the more narrow feel. They are the same as the PM grips, although people who spent the extra $75 on PM will argue that the rubber is different.
