I intend to buy a reburbed Garmin Nuvi 550 ($190 at Garmin factory store) Will use mostly in car/truck, but also on my LR. I've seen the RAM brand is the best mount. Is there a RAM model that is 'resistant' to thieves? I've seen strap-mount...nope. Also seen key-operated piece that replaces thumbscrew.....don't know about that. Better option in the brand? Thanks
I have a cheap RAM mounting device that straps on with zip ties, but honestly i only use it for unfamiliar long rides /trips. The GPS will snap off, leaving the cheap ram mounting piece tied to the bars. If someone wants to steal that, well have at it (I've been more concerned with my detachable windshield which sometimes i handcuff to the fork). I spent more time running a power source from the accessory cable up under the tank and into my tool bag -- GPS devices don't run too long without power...
I have the Garmin Zumo 450 and I use the mount it came with. It cames with the security screw that holds it down. I also replaced the **** with the keylock one. If they really wanted it bad enough they could get it but those 2 things should deter most of the spontaneous would be thieves I would think.
If you look at this pic you can see both the security screw and the locking ****. The security screw is on the very top of the unit by the flip up lever that releases it. It is the only screw on top th
at you can see in the picture
And this is just a shot of how it looks from the rider's view

Thanks, that's the kind I'm looking for but for the Nuvi model. I can see how that key-lock **** works (found it for $20). Wonder if yours is model specific for the Zumo...?
Oops sorry I read it wrong, I thought you said you were getting a Zumo 550 not a Nuvi.
I ordered the **** lock from http://www.gpscity.com/ Take a look on that link and search for Nuvi 550
One bug I've found, and this is only if you plan on listening to mp3s on it, is when you put your music on the sd card make multiple folders and put a max of about 15 songs per folder. I first had 1 folder with like 200 songs in it and it made it take a long time for the GPS unit to boot up. I found that tip over on the Zumo Forums. Great place for info http://www.zumoforums.com/
