Here's some general info on relays:

The relay you show will not fit the existing relay base and is one of the reasons I chose to buy on line. Painless Performance (I misspoke on previous posts citing Progressive as the source – thin air skiing on Mammoth must have fried too many brain cells) provided the 30 amp relay, relay base and wire terminals. The relay tutorial you provided is great!
The part #s are: Relay 80131, Base and terminals 80133.
Site address for Relay: http://www.painlessperformance.com/w...1&submit=Go%21
Site address for Base and terminals: http://www.painlessperformance.com/w...3&submit=Go%21
If you choose this method, note that the wire terminals provided are 2 different sizes, small for low current pins 85 and 86 and large for pins 30, 87 and 87a. Don’t get them mixed up.

Very timely post, the other day I was noticing that on some starts the starter seemed a little soft. I was thinking it was a little too early for the battery to be going (2 1/2 yrs). Might have to go grab the service manual and take a closer look.

Thanks - Jimbo

Why swap out to a 20A (or higher relay)? You haven't changed the load it needs to carry. You only have the lights circuit on there with this mod, which has a 15A fuse in it and the actual draw is no more than 10A. The relay won't be carrying the starter and lights at the same time.

Unless folks have had problems with the stock relay or I'm missing something here?

Did you miss: "One more thing – I got rid of the made in China relay that was on the bike and bought a 20 amp SPDT relay from Progressive" (Painless Performance)
Higher quality innards in the relay from Painless is justification for the relay swap.

Fair enough. Not that I've heard of a problem with the stock one and Bosch have a plant in China so there's no guarantee just because it says Bosch on it that its made in Germany. Chances are it is a better part though.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that MOCO did not provide a wire terminal for pin 87a. Good luck trying to find one of those.

I've always wired my ignitions so I can start up without any lights. Even though I don't have anywhere near the amount of accessories of stock bikes. But I guess the bigger question is - How do you guys get away from the cops at night if you can't run without lights?
