Project FXDXT is underway

Project 2002 FXDXT is under way. We have big plans for our 2002 FXDXT that we picked up in slightly ratty condition. This bike has about 33K on it and was ridden hard and put away wet. First up for it was a new tire. The rear had a Michelin Commander II on it that was brand new in 150/80/16. The front tire was toast as it looked like it was still the stock tire. This was immediately replaced with a matching Commander II. Just this simple change gave the bike much better handling characteristics. The 100-90-19 Commander is much more rounded than the stock Dunlop that was on the front of the bike and allowed the bike to fall into corners much easier. The first ride home was over a nice twisty canyon road and we were impressed with the stickiness of the tire. Anyonme who knows anything about the FXDXT knows that the front fork sare three way adjustable and the rear 13.5 shocks are two way adjustable. In stock form the suspension is very good, but still not what we are seeking for our canyon carving madness.
The bike is mostly in stock form as you can see with the stock fairing, stock windshield that has been cut down, stock front forks and shocks, and most definitely the stock springs in the shocks. The bags were not on it which was really the only bummer but we will find a set somewhere. The front forks even adjusted for maximum firmness are extremely soft so new springs, Ricor intiminators, and some thicker oil are in order too. It has some sort of a solo seat and also came with the stock seat which looks like a couch. The pipe is a Vance and Hines Propipe that has seen better days. The baffle has issues and it is missing the heat shields.
Wheels and brakes are stock as it looks like the brake pads are too. The bars are some variation of mini apes in 8 or so. The bike has a stage 1 air cleaner and the carb has been drilled but I am not sure if it was jetted or jetted properly as it has a bit decal popping between 2500 and 3500 rpm. The paint is rough and it will get a new paint job when the time arrives.
First up for the bike is the new windshield from Cee baileys in 14.5 height opaque black. The stock shield that has been cut down gives awful buffeting at any speed over 80 mph on the freeway and my glasses are shaking like a leaf on a tree. The shield is adjustable as it comes from the factory but still cut to short to be able to stop the buffeting no matter where the shield is adjusted.
Next up is a Thunderheader to replace the ratty looking V&H propipe. It should be arriving any day. Before we install the TH we are going to check the cam chain tensioners and see what kin dof condition they are in. It woiuld be nice to do a big bore and cams at the same time as the upgraded cam tensioner setup with the bigger oil pump and such but it will be done as finances allow. We will be rejetting with the installation of the Thunderheader as well to obtain maximum power, smoothness and running conditions for this dirty Dyna. I opted for chrome as the salt air out here is usually a bit much for the black TH and I want to minimize the need to clean this bike as it is a daily rider. It will be murdered out to our specs which means not everything will be black but almost everything. I need to have a little bit of contrast to give it that wow effect.
Next up will be a new seat. We are thinking a C&C fastback, Mustang fastback, or something lese similar with a drivers backrest as this isa utility or hard hat bike for us to get us around on a daily basis and comfort is key. It will also be used for touring twisities.
LA Choppers 13 black club bars are on the way so we need to get our cables ordered as that will be the first big thing aside from the exhaust and windshield. Not sure how the height is going to work out but we will find out.
Keep us posted on the fork oil, spring selection, you decide to go with.

I removed the regulator mounting bolts and got that out of the way.

I supported the motor with a jack and set to removing the bolts that hold the motor mount.

I was missing the upper bolt that goes in from the side and to my dismay I discovered that the lower bolt that goes in from the side was only finger tight. I pulled the motor mount out and you can see from the pic that the rubber has deteriorated from the top compared to the new one.

Needless to say once I bolted on the new motor mount (with grade 8 bolts from OSH) as the dealer was out of them th bike is much smoother. It was at low rpm's that the bike was really shaky and since this has been added I have not even noticed the vibration at all.
Here is what the final result looks like.
