I took out the plastic cover under the backbone and the rubber plugs in the neck to get better access. If tour pulling the wires out of the bars, make a diagram of all the wires in the molex connectors so they all go back in the same place. You'll need to take that apart to get the wires threw the bars.
Not if you have a 2012, the new connectors are small enough to fit through 1" bars without disassembly.

Really? that is great news! I am going to be getting some Bury 14" narrows soon, and that will surely save some time on the job. I know I have to get new clutch, brake, throttle cables - will I have to extend the wiring also? hopefully not if I don't have to take the connectors apart!

I put 12" RSD vintages apes in mine and there is still a ton of wire left. You shouldn't need any extensions. I didn't need cables either but I guess that depends on the shape of the bars.
