Default Choosing a Rear Avon Tire

Couldn't get an answer in the tire forum.

What are the differences in the Avon Cobra and Storm? Trying to choose a new back tire for my Bob. I know the Cobra is a cruiser tire and the Storm is more of a performance sport/tour tire...but what does that really mean to me?

Thanks for any info.

Cobra is a harder rubber, longer milage tire, good traction in your average street situation. Storm is a softer rubber with great traction in performance situations with the trade off being lower milage before having to replace the tire. What it means to you is, how do you drive? If you are aggresive then the perfomance tire is for you and if you drive normally and want more milage for your dollar then the cruiser tire is for you.

Ultimately I want to have confidence in my tire. I lost confidence in my stock Dunlop a little while back and want a stickier tire. I was planning on a Pirelli Night Dragon but my local indie doesn't sell them so I'm looking at Avon...I know they make a great tire.

What's odd is that Avon's website doesn't show a 17" rear tire that would fit my 4.5" rim, but I know people run them...

I guess the other question would be, is there anything to worry about pairing an Avon Cobra/Storm that are radial (I think) with my front Dunlop K591 that is bias?

I am running the storm on the back and the venom (bias) on the front. Got about 500 miles on them so far and they are a big improvement over the stock dunlops.

http://www.avonmoto.com/products/spo.../storm-2-ultra

Check out the storm 2, I was either going with the storm 2 or the Pirelli.
The Storm 2 has great ratings and a lot of positive feed back on the Forums.
I went with the 180/60 17 rear and 100/90 19 front Pirelli Night Dragons because I liked the tire better and they are the only ones other than Dunlop that have front and rear bias.

Also the load rating is less on a storm. Not by much though. Only would be concerned if you do 2-up.

The load rating for the Storm is 72...there isn't a Cobra that fits my back rim, but the stock Dunlop's rating is 73...a difference of 22lbs. I'm not too worried about that.

Now with load ratings, is a tire's rating in regards to the weight of the entire bike? That wouldn't make sense, because the stock Dunlop is rated for 805lbs. If my bike is roughly 600lbs, and i'm 180...I'd be pushing the load rating as a single rider with no luggage...

I've had the Storm on the back and Venom on the front for the past 18000 kms (11000 miles) and I am very pleased with this combo. They are very stable and stick well in the rain. I definitely will go with Avons again.

For the record I am not hard on tires at all. I think I hold the forum record of getting 29000 kms out of the stock Dunlops. I expect to get about the same with the Avons.

I ran the Avon Storm 2 Ultra 170/60ZR17 on the rear and the Avon Venom
110/90-19 on the front..Great combo for all weathers..I live in sweden and ride year round.
Changed the rear to the Pirelli Night Dragon 180/60B17 V after the Avon wore out, still a good tire but the Avons grip a little better in my opinion.

The Pirelli although a 180 is'nt really that much wider than the avon, just has a higher sidewall.

My worn out Avon 170/60x17 just before the change.

The new Pirelli ND 180/60X17..Not much difference in width.

Side Shot Pirelli.

Side Shot Avon

Avon Venom 110/90x19

I'm running the Cobra on the front of my Deuce and the Storm Ultra 2 on the rear. Love them.
