Okay, you've got a point there... spring didn't seem that long ago... where did the summer go? Unfortunately, I don't know how to run the starter out of the bike. (But I can put in my old one to see what happens.) What do you mean by "is the engine locked up"? I was able to jump start it...
Okay, so I just took my wife's, good Switchback battery and put it into mine... same click. Does that answer the battery question? So now I'm going to start taking things off to check wiring.
Okay, so, I checked everything, and everything appeared fine. So I took my old stock POS starter and installed that and it turned over right away. So, my starter came with a one year warranty so I can return it but I'm just curious if anybody knows what might have happened. Or, should I put that new starter back in and see if it starts, thinking along the line that maybe I disturbed something else causing it to work... but I know everything was good, clean and tight.
Okay, I'm back. (Whew!) I just put the new starter back in and same click. So I know its the starter. But back to my last question, why would a brand new starter (6 months old or so) fail so completely like that?

Starters are electro-mechanical devices. It's the electro that is probably the problem. A starter is just an electric motor, that has seems like miles of varnish coated wire windings. Any short or dead spot anywhere in the wiring or contacts will cause the motor not to spin when voltage is applied.
Seems the thing about electrics and electronics is that they will fail quickly, due to a default, or will work for a loooong time, problem free. I learned this through many years in the auto repair and electronics industries.
Enjoy the warranty and forget as to why it broke, they just do...dd50

well at least your engine is not locked up, fried, toast, will not turn over , in need of complete overhaul.
one of my life mottos is to never argue with sucess.
