Your FI bike does not have a ignition module.. It has an ECM that is controlling most all the functions relating to spark and fuel. Even the speedometer and signal light or alarm talks to it. That is why I always make sure all the little things are correct first. The ECM like the voltage regulator require special equipment to check. However lot of the functions can be checked by following Harley diagnostic manual. What I was listing for coil check relates back to checking ECM if say you did not have the 2 seconds of battery voltage. All that is difficult to explain and relate on here.

Not at all hard to explain! Your insight has helped me so far, and I will continue to pay attention to your advice as well as others! It's good to know that I don't have an ignition module because I couldn't find one when I was looking for it! Now we are at the ECM stage of diagnosis! Chuck from Drago's gave me a call and we spoke of a new ECM. Didn't want to shell out that kind of cash yet, but if it is needed to stop the problem, then I will shell it out, I just don't want the stealer to try to saddle one on me before I have a chance to find out what it is before I go running down there demanding my money back for the last few visits!

This may sound daft but then the bike is running bad or stops try taking the fuel filler cap off and see if you get a sucking noise. Blocked air vent hole in filler caps can stop fuel flow.
Its just another thing to check and is easy to do.

Half the fun of helping trouble shoot a problem on the web is learning all you can.

Ripsaw is right your ignition module is called an ECM. Similar purpose, a lot more involved on the newer bikes, and I'll bet a whole lot more expensive.

There's so many places to check for trouble.

Again good luck.

I know Im talking about a quad (banshee).....BUT, on my bro's quad, his bike would act up after the bike got hot (after a good ride) and would either shut off or not want to start back up.....we would have to pull start him if we stopped after a good ride.....it was very intermitant and getting on his nerves...

It ended up being the ECM

These bikes (FI anyway and in 04 the same tank worked on the FI and the Carb one) vent thru a hose attached to a orifice pipe welded to tank in front under console and vented with a tube to the ground (CA to a canister). The cap is sealed and non venting.

Thanks again and I have some more things to check! This is better than taking it to the stealer to rip me off! Chuck from Drago's gave me a shout a minute ago and we discussed the idea of the crank sensor being bad! He told me of a co worker having very similar problems and it ended up being the crank sensor wire heating up and causing an intermittent miss which resulted in very similar problems! Soooooooo I will shell out the $54 for a new one tomorrow and give it a try! Cheaper than a service call and if its not the problem, well at least I will know that the sensor is new and I can wander on to another sensor for a quick test! If my local dealer would of tried all of these suggestions, he could of had it fixed the first time! Thanks Gang and I will keep everyone updated! Oh yeah, does anyone have any crank sensor stories to tell so I can go over that issue to compare problems?

Takes 30 readings off the crank cast teeth and establishes reference with the two missing teeth. Takes 5 second with out a signal to set a code, so a bad connection could cause your problem. But it will be a bad connection since all the CKP is a coil of wire. If the connection is bad however since wire is on it, may need a new one to fix. If it does not get a signal when cranking, the fuel pump will not work. It has only 1 ohm resistance so most meters show it open. if you get one, put it in and run the wire up to ecm externally and see if it fixes problem. Save you a lot of time. They are not going to take it back but least you won't have route it up thru bike for nothing. Can sell on here if you do not need it. I have yet to figure if the ECM checks the 30 counts to always insure it it correct while running since if it truly is you problem that is what it would have to be doing.
