I would have to disagree on this. My stock FXR4 weights in at 560 lbs - measured and my 2000 FXDX weights in at 670 lbs - measured w/o bags and 1/4 fairing. Facts are facts here. My FXDX is 110 lbs heavier than my FXR4.
I like the handling of the FXR4 and the power of my FXDX. I have the FXDX forks with heavy oil, works rear shocks and a true-track. Setup the preload per the instructions (HD and Works matched specs) and tweaked in the rebound/compression on the forks over time. Do need to upgrade the fork springs though, stock ones are always too weak. Still the FXR4 feels like it's on rails - more so that the dyna and its stock. However, the dyna can overpower the FXR4 in and out of turns so ultimately it wins.
My bad. For some reason at that point I was thinking old dyna vs 06-up dyna not fxr vs dyna. That's pretty amazing if its really that much lighter. Makes me want to swap a twin cam into one even more.
I had an fxr 87 and it was a good bike
I true track will greatly help that rear disconnect feeling
it stiffins up the entire connections and keeps the rubber rear mount from flexing horizonal
