Default Plate Side Mount-Legality Questions

So, is it illegal to have the plate side mounted without a light on the plate?

I've seen some nice mounts, but some don't have a light directed on them. Just curious as I'm getting serious about either side mounting or layback style.

Since we're on the topic......
I need a side mount for an 07 Bob! But everything I find says up to 06. What changed???

One of my best friends is a cop and his captain is a motorcycle guy and used to be amotorcycle cop.My friend said as long as it can be seen and read it's ok. His chopper cop captain said the same thing. He also said that if a cop wants to be ajerk and stop you for it he will, but most don't care. A few months ago I was doing about15 mphover the speed limit when I passed a local copnear my house. I don't know if he turnedaround to get me because I pulled into a neighborhood and lost him. About20 minutes later I was clear on the other side of town when that same cop pulled up behind me at a stoplight. I watched him in my rear view as he turned his head sideways and read my plate. When the light turned green I went straight and he eventually turned left.

My parnter has two brothers; one a deputy, the other a small-town police officer. They both said the same thing as above. If they really want to pull you over, they will find an excuse!

In Virginia, a license plate illumination is required. Your vehicle will not pass the state safety inspection without it.

Illuminated plates here in NY also, whether you drive a bus, car, ride a bike or haul a trailer, there has to be a light. It's pretty easy to hook up a light, HD did it on the new Nightster Sporty model, pretty slick looking also.
