So I've been looking into getting a 21" for my fxdb, and will probably go with relacing a jireh rim to my stock hub. My question is for all you who have done this, or otherwise have a larger front wheel and lower than stock shocks is, did this effect your handling at all negatively? From what I gather, the rake and trail changes quite a bit when you drop the rear, and even more so when you go bigger on the front end. I get a bit of a high speed wobble when I'm leaning into a curve 60-80mph with my current set up. 19" in front, dropped 2" in the rear. Sometimes, if the road is bad, the wobble is pretty bad. Will this get worse with a 21", or is something else at fault here?
I'm looking for first hand experience and knowledge in the matter. Thanks guys!
PS. I've checked motor mounts, tire cupping, pressure and balance, and have new bearings. Also checked steering head nut, and fall away.
I haven't noticed any loss in performance, and I ride fast and love curves.
If anything I think it handles better than before. I swapped out the wheels with wheels from Landmark MFG, they were about the same as buying all the stuff and having them laced to my hubs. Gives me a far wider range of tires now.
have a 120x21 in the front and 180x18 in the back.
I'll be sure to check out the alignment, but for the most part it seems the wobble goes away when I run the regular stock 12" suspension, leading me back to the rake and trail theory. Unless its just coincidence.
Or does adding a larger wheel and lowering the rear not make a significant change to cause an issue...?
if anything it will improve your handling as the contact patch for the 120 will be larger. If you are getting a whoble out of the bike as DON stated check your align, i would be willing to bet the rear wheel is off. typically if you feel it in the front the issue is in the rear of the bike
