Plugging the Standard Controls Shift Linkage Hole
After removing his outer primary cover and discovering the dilemna he was not sure how to proceed. He knew he absolutely did not like the plastic plug in the outer cover and also knew he would never to back to standard controls.
We decided to tap and plug the hole to create a permanent leak free solution.
The hole was already the correct diameter for a 3/8" NPT (3/8-18) tap. We removed the small gasket which is sandwiched between the inner primary and the outer primary with standard controls.

Tapping the boss.

Be certain to place a towel just under the boss to prevent any chips or aluminum shavings from finding their way into the chain or housing.

Tap removed. The inner primary housing is a very good quality casting and taps very nicely. Be sure to apply some pipe sealant prior to installing the plug.

Completed job. Plug recessed nicely into the boss.

All in all a pretty easy 5-minute job to ensure a leak free solution. After completing the job I decided to google it to see how others have addressed this issue and it appears that the majority of people just live with the plastic plug and others use a small convex freeze plug to seal off the bore.
I feel that tapping and using a pipe plug is a much cleaner and more permanent leak free solution so I thought I would share it just in case anyone else runs into this issue.
