Question Windshield question

I have a quick mount touring windshield on my 2013 Street bob.

The windshield is nearly straight out, which I believe is causing some buffeting and looks to far out . I would like to bring it back , possibly nearly parallel or at least to a 20-30 degree angle to the fork. If you notice a cars front windshield its at a 30-40 degree angle.

The upper quick clamp does not allow for tilting. Would it be wise to cut the bracket and if so what is it made of( ss or plain steel). And what design for the cut.

The lower clamp is for pivoting , where as the upper is a slot(probably for safety break away) and has no way to move back without hitting the clamp.

Would appreciate members help.

Thanks,

Roger

Don't cut those nice Stainless brackets or clamps! I just made short spacers to bump the lower mounting point on the windshield frame out about an inch. Someone has a thread on here about this topic and someone used mending brackets. I made mine from two pieces of 1" tall x 1/8" thick x 2 1/2" long aluminum bar stock with 2 holes drilled about an inch apart for each side. Add nuts and bolts to clamp them to windshield frame in original holes, use stock bolt to hold other end of spacer to fork clamp bracket and you're done. This made the angle of the windshield match the fork angle. Haven't road tested it yet but it's simple, strong, and cheap enough to experiment with different spacer lengths to get different angles. Most expensive part was the $5 for SS bolts, nuts, and washers.

That sounds like a great mod. I know I dislike the angle of my shield and would like to angle it further back as well. Could you post some photos to give me a visual aid?

I'm in the same boat as you! I'm currently trying to fix the buffeting issue. You are on the right track in believing that the screen is way too vertical. It causes too much turbulence in the wind flow. I made an extension for the bottom to push it out. But I still need a few more degrees. So I'm at the point of considering cutting the upper mount and re-drilling the holes.

Have you tried adjusting the ws? my fxd also has the 29 deg rake, if I run it (HD compact) all the way down to the lower tree I get buffeting, up about an inch and it works sweet. I have to go a little higher if Im wearing my FF helmet

edit: Im 5'10" and run the compact ws

I did the bottom spacer. Made it out of aluminum stock with stainless nuts and bolts.

Do you ride with a Full Face helmet? I don't really notice it when I don't wear a helmet and ride. But with my FF helmet it feels like thumping on my head. So much that my vision is compromised when doing speeds over 60 mph.

Question Windshield question

[QUOTE=Racqueteer9;12156931]
Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your idea.

Bringing the bottom of Windshield forward to tip it back may work, but esthetically and functionally may be not what I want. For now I am reviewing all ideas. So far your idea and another to cut top bracket are being considered.

I also want to look into a Wind Damper, which I never heard of till I posted this thread.
I hope other members chime in with their ideas.

Jamie,
Your photo is great. Good job. I would like to angle the windshield more that seen in your picture. The upper bracket is restricting. Any ideas to get more of an angle back.
thanks,
Roger
