Not sure what thread you saw, but I have not reinstalled my pipes yet and I have the 2 > 1 Bassani RRs - probable still not the best for hp but I sure like the looks. With the HPI tb and headwork I am hoping for around 110 hp and 115 torque - just a wag. Glad you are enjoying the thread, and by the way I love questions - would not be doing this if I did not like "talking" about engine builds.
Got a letter from Cometic today with a UPS tracking # so I checked and the new head gaskets should show up tomorrow but I leave again the next day for a 4 day trip If they come early enough I will install the heads.
Today I filled up the primary with some Belray, then I installed the S&S lifters and the lifter covers. A 6" Ball end Allen wrench(3/16") made torquing easy - have heard about others just using feel on the inboard fasteners. One other small learning point, I was unable to use my rethreading tap on two of the lifter cover holes because of the cylinder fins - should have cleaned those holes when the cylinders were off.
could it have been another FXDB I viewed??? hmmm possible... anyhoo.. cool thanks for the information.. will continue to follow this one...
hey Alan, got mine all sorted out and took it for a nice 100 + mile ride yesterday.
I realize that saying this right before you leave on four day trip when you are so close to being done is tough, but it was a blast to ride.
I ran it pretty much how I would ride normally just not as hard. hit 5000 rpm's early on and up to 6000 rpm,s at one point. The rev come on a lot faster than before. she ran great and never had a hick up.
Definitely need a dyno tune, just not as crisp as it should be.
As for torquing those lifter cover bolts, I switched to 12 points during this build.
Had to go hop onto my little Yamaha 230 dirt bike and ride around some - it is a nice ride on my 13 acres.
I think I will do the same as you when I finish, break it in and make sure there are no problems, maybe a couple ATs then dyno. Getting itchy for sure, at least I got a pack of days off after the next trip but also a wedding - my #2 son
.030" Cometic Head Gaskets came in this afternoon finally. Did not have a lot of time but managed to get the cylinder heads on. Just followed the Cometics instructions for torque sequence and torque settings(9, 14, 22, 35, and final 42 ft-lbs).
Thats all I can do until I get back on Saturday, but I have the next 10 days off and expect to ride!
Makin progress. Can't find the pic but another free mod is clearencing the upper push rod tubes internaly to prevent a ticking due to the PR's tapping the tubes.

I saw that mod on HTT, but he(FSG?) had a lathe to enlarge the top and bottom of the upper pr tubes. No lathe here, so I was going to pass on that. Was thinking about the recommendation to pull the rockers toward the cam side prior to torquing down, suppose to help the same problem.

I did the support alignment but didn't see the clearencing thing till it was too late. I'd use a die grinder and one of my port n Polish sanding drums. Least you saw what I did.
I just kinda centered my rocker supports as I snugged them down and ran them like that. My motor is as quiet as can be expected, unless you count the noise out of the intake caused mostly by the fact that the intake is so close to the valves. The TW777's are defiantly louder than the TW222's though.
Once I got rid of that huge compression leak in the center of the head ( loose ACR ) she is as quiet as can be. Really Pi$$ed me off that the one thing I have done at HD bites me right in the butt. If not for that it started and ran perfect from the get go.

Looking good Alan. Now that your this close you must be chomping at the bit to get it done. Can't wait to see the finished motor.
