Default Motherwell rack - nuts

Anyone got an easy way to attach a nut under the fender to screw on the luggage rack ... I got mine on with several extension bits and a socket and lots of swearing. Is there a way to 'stick' the nut in place so I can take it off and on (for taking an occasional passenger) ?

Matkiwi. You can buy a nut from your local dealer. I got one for my rack although I haven't fitted it yet. It is a steel nut with a turned down neck and the neck has a circlip groove in it.

You fit the nut from underneath, the necked down diaslides up through the hole in the fender and then you slide the circlip in the groovenow showing above the fenderto hold it in place.

I remember someone on the forum saying the best way to fit the nut is todrop a long zip tie through the fender hole, attach the nut and then pull it back up and fit the clip.

All the best. WW.

HD p/n 59768-97 = fender/seat nut kit, cost about $5
A nice thumb screw will cost you about $10-$15 dollars but a stainless/chrome bolt or screw will work just dandy.

Use a long wire tie to get the adapter in place the first time, unless you have small hands (I didn't use the wire tie).

I can take my fender rack off in about 30 seconds........but I am slow.

Close, but not exactly. Drop the nut (heavy side down) onto the long zip tie, so that it rests on the locking portion at the bottom of the tie. Then feed the pointy end of the tie UP thru the hole in the fender (it may take a few tries to get it in the hole, but it is possible), then pull the tie all the way up until the top of the nut comes thru the fender. Before removing the tie, put the clip on it.

Thanks ... sounds a damn sight easier than trying sqeeze my fat hands up the fender ... one fender/seat nut kit on order ... you'd think Motherwell would include it as part of the package

Motherwell would have sold you the exact same part for about $1.50 (USD) more than HD charges. I bought one from them, and they (MW) told me then, it would be cheaper from HD.
