Hi All, new member here, Joe Cap. I ride a 2012 Dyna Switchback.....love it.
However, I am having battery issues. Short distant riding red battery light comes on.
It's charging, checked with a volt meter (14.34V when running) and istalled a new battery. Same issue, while riding red battery light comes on.
Any suggestions?
save self the headaches of self - diagnosing (which is usually close but wrong). Take it to biggest best HD dealer and have them test the charging system incl. physical parts like rotators/stators/brushes, voltage regulator, etc.
Checking a charging system with a volt meter is fine to a point, but did you check it under a full load, all accessories on, lights on high indictors going, any extras turned on. Also you could have a loose connection in the charging system that only shakes up while riding or after the connection heats up. Good advice from Bobby get it to a HD dealer, the right equipment can do wonders, especially in electrical.
+1 on having the battery load tested. Two years life expectancy on a battery is not unusual, especially if it wasn't on a tender through the winter months.
Could still be the charging system, but eliminate the battery and all connections before you go there.
Some information may pertain to the batteries in the bikes but I didn't see any information about the AGM battery, that's what comes with the Harley. FYI, short rides provide a surface charge to the battery, if you frequently ride the short ride, you may want to invest in a "smart" charger. Check your owner's manual there is an information page in there concerning AGM batteries. My 2013 has this page.
