I hear the "extra 3-5hp" arguement a lot when this subject comes up. I personally did my tuner and dyno tune to get the smoothness through every gear. (I could always feel a slight surge to it when crusing) The bonus was being able to use 6th gear more and a few more ponies.

6th gear at 50mph. couldnt do that on the stock tune without the bike threatening to shake itself apart.
