Friend got a great buy yesterday on a 2007 dyna that was fully customized with only 3K miles. It has a fancy digital spedo that contains a tack and all the gages. First time he rode it the bike would not start after stopping for gas. I meet him at the gas station and with the key on when you flip the kill switch you hear the fuel pump run for about 3-4 seconds. Everything electrical works except the bike will not turn over. I jump his battery to my car with the same results. I ask him to make sure it is in neutral and I jump the plus side of his battery to the starter solenoid and it cranks and fires up. He rides it three miles, parks it and the same thing happens, it will not crank (it was in gear). Another biker tells him the 07 dyna has a safety feature that will not allow it to start even with the clutch pulled in if it is in gear. He puts the bike in neutral and it fires right up. He tests it by starting it two more times while in neutral and it cranks and fires. He puts it in gear, pulls in the clutch and it will not crank. Will the 2007 dyna not crank if it is in any gear or does he have another issue stopping the bike from cranking? My geezer glide will start in any gear, clutch pulled in, which is great if I ever stall it at a light. Not sure if he got a manual with the bike.
Most bikes will either start in neutral or with the clutch in. By the sounds of it, your buddy's bike doesn't know the clutch is being pulled in, so it waits for neutral. If that's the case, I would be willing to bet it's the switch or the wiring to the switch, that is under the clutch perch. If that's not sending the signal, bike doesn't know the clutch is in, and it won't start unless the bike is in neutral.
