Default High Voltage - should I ride it home?

My voltage is starting to push 15.5 volts on a 2012 FLHTK. I searched and found that I should replace that voltage regulator as it can fry the battery. I rode 30 miles in to work this way. I have a Harley dealer near work. The question is can I buy the regulator and ride it home to fix or should I pay the dealer to change it to insure that I don't damage any other components. Thanks in advance.

Fix ASAP. The battery will get damaged and overheat if it's overcharging. Heat is a mortal enemy to a battery.

Do you think it is damaged already? I believe it just started today - 30 miles...

When my reg went out on the way home it was running at 18 volts. Replaced the reg and it was back to normal. Didnt hurt the battery but you are rolling the dice.

I had this happen to a Suburban years ago (I know not a bike).
We were 55-60 miles from a town.
So we drove it to the nearest gas station/shop.
When we got there the battery was about to pop.
It was a brand new sealed battery (back in the day most were not).
We got lucky it did not explode.

I would fix it ASAP, test the battery and replace if needed.

I ordered a regulator for $120 less than at my local dealer. Going to try and make it home. If I buy a new battery I am just about even. If the stator goes that is a whole other story...

it can be normal for an over 15 to occur on occasion and the battery will not bulk until it passes the 16 level. the protection circuit zener is around 14.7>15.2. i would have the battery and associated wiring checked first since any resistance here can fool the regulator, even an iffy battery that is sulfating.

It is pretty much pegged at 15.5 when not at idol. I will check the battery and wiring. Could this be indicative of a voltage regulator going bad? If I don't find anything wrong with the wiring I will install the new regulator. If the voltage goes down then I know. If not I will keep looking.

So I get my new regulatorand installed it - and it seemed worse! Went to 16V and that is as far as the meter goes. Instructions say check your grounds and test voltage at the battery. So I did both. Son of a bitch the voltage at the battery was right around 14.5 when the meter on the bike said 16. Guessing bad volt meter. Dang!!! Learned a lesson. Think I will leave new (aftermarket) regulator on and carry the old for a spare. At least I can ride!
