failed coil
hey folks I have a mystery to solve:
I have an 06 roadglide and with a power commander3.I swiched pipes and attempted to down load a new map.I had issues with getting it to communicate with my computer but was eventualy able to download map.I then took it in to be dyna tuned and they too had issues with power commander.took it out for a test run and it was running **** poor turned around and tried to limp it home had a loud pop a bunch of smoke and then nothing.it appears coil exploded,there is oil or something all over bike and melted plastic on cylinder heads.
Has anyone heard of a coil exploding?What would cause it? What do I look for to trouble shoot?

I have had more than one coil fail on bikes, boats and cars. None were caused by anything. Once I replaced the coil, all was well. I have borrowed a coil in the past off a tow vehicle at the lake to replace a coil on a boat, then swapped back for the trip home.
Had it happen with 2 coils that were bad out of the box or very shortly after.
For me it was always a degrading performance and increasingly harder to start as symptoms.
