When I was looking at cams, I would try to find one where the torque curve would begin to go up about 500 rpm below my average cruising speed. The flatter the curve, the better though.

Head work will depend on the cam itself since you want the head flow to match the cam.

What I did was look at literally hundreds of dyno sheets for a torque curve that I found close to my needs.

You know how you could save loads of time & trouble
