Default External Breather Set up.

Hey all , I recently have been doing some reading on external breather set ups because frankly I hate the idea of already hot burnt air/oil mix going back into the engine . question is with the SE stage 1 kit I have how could I route a external breather? there is deep pockets that the breather bolts go into and then a rubber topper that has a small tube that goes back in behind my filter. Not sure if anyone else has successfully done a EBS set up with this style filter plate or not.

Many have done it; you just need to do some research.

Remove the rubber pieces, replace the breather bolts, drill and tap the backing plate connectors to the head for barbed hose fittings, attach hoses and route to an exit point of your choosing. Some use catch cans at the exit point; some don't.

Do a search on external venting;you will find some examples......

I have vented several externally but all are early models with the early SE backing plate attached with the metal bracket; different situation.

I think you can use the bolts you have with some minor modification. Cut the flat curve part that connects the cap and vents the crank case into the intake but keep the cap. Seal the end of the breather bolt with epoxy or silicone sealant to close that end off. Cross drill the breather bolt so the crank case oil mist is captured in the breather bolt sockets and can vent into the barbed fittings you will install. Install the modified breather bolt and seal the cavity with the modified rubber cap. A little silicone sealant to secure the cam might not be a bad idea; don't know how tight the rubber cap fits to the breather bolt.

I have attached a photo of one way to install barbed fittings to a backing plate but they can be installed at any angle. 3/16" or 1/4" hose can be used and most run two hoses to a "T" or "Y" fitting behind the air filter and route a single hose out to an exit point. Some exit to a small catch can and some just exit to the atmosphere.

There are several examples of ways to do this on this forum; use the search function and see what turns up. Maybe some forum members that have modified that later models to vent externally will post pics of how they did it.

This is how I did my Ventilator Air Cleaner, a kit from DK Customs and a couple of hardware store pieces.

This thread has been pretty active lately

I found this one informative as well

There is a thread in the sportster section that is a pretty informative discussion but I don't have the link. Best bet is to Google "external breather for Harley Davidson twin cam" several threads from this site will come up
