Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I have begun looking for parts for a planned engine upgrade on my 2002 Road King and spotted some heads on a local Craigslist post that were too good to pass up. I am a bit confused by the casting marks.
Both the head castings have the 99 suffix to the casting number but appear to have been cast in 2012. The combustion chambers and sealing surfaces appear to be in good shape. Trying to figure out if these are a good starting point for my 88 inch to 98 inch build.
Others suggested sending my stock heads out for porting but I would prefer to gather parts ahead of time to minimize down time.
Any thoughts as whether or not these heads are a good starting point? For what I paid, no heartbreak if I can't use them.
Those are stock head casting numbers.. I have a set of 02s that say 02 in the circles but I don't think the ones you have are cast in 2012.. In 2006, HD changed the castings to 06s IIRC and the casting number changed to -06.. There is not reason continue with the -99s after that unless the were casting as direct replacements.
Pics of the valve springs, intake and exhaust ports will help date the year of stock heads that they are.
The castings are good, especially if you know someone that can port the heads.. Some street ports on these suck and going to the later heads can be beneficial if the persons ability to port heads is not that hot..
Thanks for the replies. I will post some photos but to cut to the chase, these heads have beehive springs and the intake and exhaust valve guide castings conform to the 06 (late 05?) and up form factor.
I figured for $100.00 for the pair it was hard to miss given the condition.

The next challenge is who to send them to.
Thanks for the input.

Could be 05s or 06-up.. If 05 then they are early castings. Exhaust port view can confirm.
The plan at this point is to keep the Andrews 26 cams, SE/AC and V&H Pro Pipe, bore to 98", pistons fitted and have the heads cleaned up and compression set to 9.4-9.6. That seems to be a pretty well understood set up for baggers. Not a hot rod but good torque.
Not in a huge hurry either. Wanting to collect up as many of the parts up front in hopes of a short down time.
