Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
this is how my oil is in the oil thank before engine start and after the engine is started..in a couple of seconds alot of bubbles.. could this be air or moisture ?
and i made a picture with my oil gauge too while the engine is running.
The bubbles are completely normal in a Harley. That is the oil being scavenged and pumped back in the sump or bag on a Softail. Moisture would be more in the form of milky after stirred. Unless of course you let it sit a long time and then it would be on bottom of the oil.
Transmission dip stick looks same way after running.
A point to remember is that there are 2 pumps in the motor. A feed pump and scavenge pump. Feed pump make pressure and feed the motor. The scavenge pump sucks the oil out of the motor. To ensure that there is always the right level of oil in the motor, the scavenge pump is larger than the feed pump.. As a result the scavenge pump can suck air besides oil. The bubbles you are seeing is the scavenge pump sucking air.. This is normal operation. The bubbles become less and less as the oil heats up.
It can be a little worse if the pump allows oil to flow into the motor when sitting as the oil get whipped up by the flywheels before getting pumped out. At lower levels this is considered normal also..
