2007 Dyna Street Bob
completed 107 kit with 10.5 pistons, new cams, lifters, heads, etc... Power Vision tune.
First several attempts to start left me bewildered as it wouldn't turn over and it was spewing. Then I found that my plug cables were reversed on the ignition coil; duh! And that was after reading all the posts about dummy's accidentally doing that.
Anyway, the bike fired right up. Yay!
I let it run for a little over 1 minute. I went to touch the throttle and as soon as I barely touched it at 1%, the bike shut off. Since then, I can't get it started.
Yes I'm pushing the MCRs.
So here's what I've done so far:
checked battery after full charge. Tested off at 12.6V.
When cranking; battery fell to 10, 9, 8V. Bummer.
Replaced with a brand new Harley glass pack battery from HD.
Results were the same. Tried to start and bike turns and turns but doesn't fire up. This new batt also fell to 8V while cranking.
Checked all fuses - good
Pulled plugs and they appear normal.
I feel compression (air) when cranking.
No spark observed when cranking. (But since batt is being drained I'm sure there's not enough power for spark).
Bike has a solid sealed ignition coil so I can't really test that.
Checked stator connector. It's not shorted to ground and pins check ok. I can't check AC from stator because bike won't run.
Checked CKP - no issue there.
Fuel is good.
Just no spark from not enough power at this point.
So, what drains a brand new battery enough that it won't start?
Is it a charging system item or an electrical problem ?
I'm at a loss. I'd hate to do it but I'm seriously thinking of having HD do their diagnostics on the bike.
If you are testing for spark with the plugs out you will not see any FYI. How did you check the CKP?
The best test for a CKP is to look for tach signal when cranking. They can be bad and pass the test in the FSM. If the data reports (or tach shows) a few hundred rpm when cranking, the CKP is good.
Feeling air is not performing a compression test.
How do you know you have fuel pressure?
Did you check fuses?
Did you check connectors you disconnected?

Agreed. We shouldn't install a new battery without charging it fully off the bike first. Trying to start your bike in the current circumstances is doing your poor battery no good at all! If you were able to start your bike and take it out for a long ride, your battery would be fine, but you haven't got to that point yet.
