When starting my deluxe, the starter makes an initial loud knock noise. At least I believe it is the starter. It only does it once, then the bike starts up. Is this a clue that something is going wrong with the starter? Or is this a normal sound I should just get used to? 2011 Deluxe with just 2400 miles on it. Please help.
there is a spring loaded compensator off the crankshaft up near your toes on left shifter area, chain connects it to your clutch basket, job is to absorb shock loads between crankshaft and drive line, they do wear out and stock design is a bit more fragile than the se version or a baker drive train one. I did change mine years ago then I started adding cams and 103 kit to my bike. if the spring is weak or clearances on the moving hub parts wear u get clunking

i assume you are new to the machine??
well starters do make noise. the first thing that must happen before the starter really starts to spin is the solenoid plunger retracts/extends to force the bendix gear into the starter ring gear on the clutch basket.
now if you had this machine awhile and the noise changed, it is worthy of a look-see to be safe, really just a gasket. that said, a battery that is wearing out is not as strong so the process takes a tad longer so maybe some more noise, load test it.
After digging into the battery information, I discovered the battery came from a CanAm Spyder Roadster (this is a sports dealership). The battery that they put on this Deluxe only has a CCA of 200 and Ah of 10. So, changing the battery out is first on my list. So we'll see.
The battery you have is marginal to even run your bike correctly. 10 amps ??????????
Agree. I entered this battery info to my Amazon page and it came up with "This item does not fit your 2011 Deluxe" Called local HD dealership. New battery is 18.5ah and 315cca, big difference. Thanks.
