Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
to get the proper perspective I found a 2006 EG Classic EFI with 54k as a barn find. It was really cheap and I was able to ride it home but needed some work and so far I've changed the cam chain tensioners, rocker breather filters and all the gaskets, lifters, inner primary seal, shifter shaft seal, primary chain tension pad, new clutch plates and a few other small items. basically maintenance stuff. It's the original 88ci and it runs okay but on today's test ride I was about 50mph and I believe around 2000rpms or so and rolled on the throttle to see what response I would get and got nothing. I mean nothing! Once it reaches riding temperature and sitting idle it chugs at 850-900 rpms and then pops back up to 1000 and for few seconds and then down to 850-900 a couple of seconds and back to 1000. As you would expect when hitting that low rpm range the oil light comes on as well.
you might want to check your fuel pressure and the condition of the fuel in the tank, those years were prone to pinholes in the in-tank fuel lines and after sitting for a long time the fuel system might be gunked up in general. fuel pressure test is in order.

What was the last thing you did to the motor before this condition started. Were you able to get more power prior to making changes. I would go back through what you did to the engine, could be something simple.
Well when I rode it home it was at a low speed and this was the first test ride since then so no significant history to go by. It very well could have been this way from the beginning and I would suspect it was since it had been sitting for several years. I should have replaced the fuel system to begin with. The tank is clean.
You may have pinched the oil pump oring when putting the cam plate and pump back on causing the motor to sump ( crankcase filled with oil ) this causes loss of power and heat due to the flywheels dragging threw the oil
If you search sumping you'll find lots of info
I appreciate the info. Not sure if this fits my situation, I've checked the oil serval times with concern of not having enough just being paranoid. It's checked out okay each time cold or hot. As far as the heat goes, I just don't know the bike I guess. I've heard this particular motor ran hot, it only hold about 4qts of oil. Thank again!
I did confirm no oil sumping issue as one person had thrown out there. I went back into cam chest and reset the timing on cams, sprockets just made sure all was aligned properly. Adjusted throttle cables, installed a New fuel pump and fuel regulator. Fuel line started leaking after new pump installation so it was changed. New Throttle Position Sensor was also installed. Some may not have been absolutely necessary but Im glad I did it all because this thing now runs great!

I have been told that 2006 was a very good year for Harley. Post a few pics and if you don't mind what you paid.
