Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Barneyboy, it IS a lot like that except for the knurl. Even rounded off at the edge like your tool. I have a magnet on a stick but it's old school, about 3/8" OD with no focus ring.
Motojockey, I thought #19 or #20 might be in the running. ( Number19 has to go in from the starter side, despite the picture) Maybe 20 as it shows to be in the outer cover, which I did pull to change the gasket. But both are shown in the Harley manual as being split bushings. IF the HD book was wrong, & IF it was loose in the outer cover bore, it could be the animal.
I'm going to measure the bushing / spacer & see if it might belong in the cover. I sure don't want to pull the cover if I don't have to. (New James gaskets & Amsoil synthetic oil!)
Thanks to all who've taken the time to weigh in on this so far.
Thinking back, did you ever have such a part go missing on a previous job? Maybe it's been laying in some nook or cranny for years, just waiting to get its revenge for being abandoned. I had this happen with a small bolt once, drove me nuts until I remembered having to replace a lost one about a year earlier....
That's good info, Since 1968. I did some snooping over the weekend & found just as you did, that the bushing is "close, but no cigar" in size,, too big. Plus, it is a solid part where both 19 & 20 are split bushings.
As for could it be an orphan: I don't THINK so as my bike shed is brand new last fall, having been built to get the horses out of the carport & protected over the winters.
But that's not to say the part couldn't have come from a tool bag or similar newly introduced source.
But with y'all's help, I'm pretty sure it wasn't left out of the bike when I put it back together. Thanks!
Below are the dimensions from a few different aftermarket suppliers.
Good info Barney....... I thought part #20 was the dowel type bushing to help hold the gasket in place. I forgot about the bushing in the outer primary case for the starter shaft.
