Got my 05 twin cam torn down looking for a loud rattling noise . I was suspecting the crank but when I removed the jugs and pistons there was no up or down play in the rods or no tightness in the rod bearings . I removed the outer timing chain and gears and checked the runout on the nose of the crank at the round section right behind the crank gear notch . The dial indicator shows just under .003" . Do I have to remove the cams and oil pump and check runout further in ,or should this be OK ?. The front piston was scuffed badly and seems to have a lot of piston to wall clearance . Just using a feeler gauge it has about .006" as near as I can tell . Would this cause the noise ? I have replaced lifters and gone through the valve train twice trying to cure this noise and installed rocker lockers .
Mileage? Modifications? When/how does the noise present; cold? hot?; we need more information. .006" piston to wall is a lot, particularly for stock hyper pistons.
The jugs and pistons are S&S 97 inch sidewinder kit . they were put in at about 45000 kms. the bike has 108000 kms on it now . The noise is there hot or cold . If you hold it at 2000 rpm it sounds like it is going to come apart by itself.
