Default another 'help me choose' thread - cams… 583/574/555

I'm pretty new to this engine stuff and while frantically reading all the stickies I can, I'm looking for some real world advice on cam choices to install while my bike's in getting a 106 install..

The bike:
07 Street Bob, currently stage 1'd with V&H slip-ons.
I ride mostly 1-up, around town and day/weekend trips.
Occasionally haul camping gear for weekend and longer trips but none of that ways more than the occasional passenger.

The work being done:
S&S 106" Big Bore (gives a CR 10:1), Thundermax tuner and selected cam
(upgrading the clutch, oil pump and lifters while we're in there)

There's a good chance I'll be installing a 2-into-1 on there this year or next, depending on bonus/tax season

Anyway, on to the cams my mech suggested:

S&S easy start 583
He put this in a soft tail along with a 106 recently and it's pulling about 95hp 115 ft/lbs, figures the lack of counterbalance will boost my numbers a little

Fueling 574
He's never installed this, but says it's similar to the RedShift 575 which he loved apart from the noise

Woods 555
He's no experience with this but the dyna guys on this board seem to love em

Any thoughts you can share?

I'd go for the S&S 585, I run that along with the 106 kit and am extremely pleased with it

Thanks Tat2u, can you tell me anything about it - how it rides, where you feel it?

no headwork... yet

what do you mean by compression set correct? It's 10:1 with that kit, is that correct?

looking on their site, S&S have the 585 down as a horsepower cam - i do a lot of highways but i'm very rarely spending a lot of time above 85-90mph... then again, how much torque does a dyna need? i wish i could just go ride a few

Yeah, the 583 and 585 are completely different critters, but it seems that every time someone asks about the 583, the thread veers into 585, and then, equivalent cams. I was in the same boat, and it was somewhat frustrating. Suffice to say, there are plenty of good cams out there, and even more good opinions. After a few calls to builders and to S&S, I went with the 583's. The jugs and heads are still out, so I'm afraid I can't give a review yet, but I should have all the pieces parts back in a few weeks, and will let everyone know. Good luck.

yup, i'm hella confused... it's already going to be "more" than it was, I just don't understand how what the curves show translates to real life... i think i'd be hard pushed to choose a wrong one, just wondering how to choose the one that's most-right!

You need headwork to breath. The cam can't do it all. There are some vendors here doing basic headwork for as low as $299. Remember, it's all about flow and volumetric effeciencies.

Yeah, with a TC96 Street Bob, a loping big cruiser torque monster in not on your list. Being a 'light' bike, riding one up and I suspect some frequent trips to the red line, look for an intake close in the mid 40's.

Also note that the max lift your stock valve springs are rated for is .585. This is why the Red Line 575's are popular. For the easy starts, even the 570 ain't a bad cam for agressive street use.

Are you buying a 106 kit? How sure are you that the bores are round and straight. To be dead sure, bore your exsisting to the 106 or hell, 107. Pistons cost the same anyway.

Summary:
Heads by Bad Boyz - $299
Bore to 107
S&S pistons at 10.2/10.4
S&S EZ Start 570 (most everyone over cams ya know)
PV or PC tuner
Dyno tune

OK, just one man's take. Adj as required.

Thanks Mr Bentwrench, that helps
"aggressive street use" is a good way to describe what i'm after - quick off the mark, fun on the highways with enough ***** to haul me and a tent dragging pegs across country

I'm expecting to get the S&S 106 kit

Also, being in Canada I'm a little more limited to vendors and even more so with cost
I'm not looking for a monster racetrack build, just a sweet bolt-on bump for more fun

...I don't currently run this thing to its limits but would love a little more on tap, y'know?
