Default 1998 Heritage 1340 upgrades

Hey guys, I've been sorting through tons of Threads about this and I've found lots of different opinions. I'd like to get some experiences from you guys. My bike is all stock except for pipes, which I don't like. Just got back from a 2500 mile trip and was wondering about upgrades you have done. I only ran about 300 miles on the interstate. I definitely need a 6 speed if I'm gonna run the interstate but I also need a little more top end power. I love that I got 48 mpg on the state roads. I want to do the upgrades next winter but wanted to start buying the parts now. I would like to know what you guys did and how you like it. I'd like to get it right the first time. I'm open to any changes. I'm going to freshen the old girl up anyway so cam, carb, big bore, heads, transmission......I really don't care but I only want to do it once. Thanks in advance for the info. By the way, the trip was absolutely awesome. Indiana to Orlando, Florida. I loved driving along the beach.

As a fellow Evo owner since 1990 I recommend you call into the Evo section and meet up with plenty of fellow owners, as well as for their advice.

As for your bike, you do not need a 6-speed! That will kill performance at speed and leave you needing even more performance than you say you want. Those are two conflicting things and the 6-speed will cost serious money. Your bike is fine at speed, you are the weak link! Wear ear plugs, if you don't already, they cost pennies and are the cheapest tuning aid on the Planet.

As for performance, there are things that are easy to bolt on and others than need surgery - getting inside the engine. The easy stuff includes: a change of air filter, with suitably adjusted carb; free-flow exhaust; ignition module, to provide better advance curves; new cam. It is quite reasonable to do all those things as a single upgrade.

Internal changes include: high compression ratio pistons; ported cylinder heads; stroker crankshaft. Any combination of those can be used, along with the list above.

From the above you can see that the cost of a new trans is easily blown on more interesting stuff! Modern Harleys only have 6-speed trans so they can meet recent EPA noise regulations. If it wasn't for them they would still have 5-speeds.

i used a lot of 27 cams in evos from bone stock to some that had Head work and compression raised.Really nice all around cam imo.

i am with the other guys stay away from a 6 speed in a 80 inch motor.

a nice 2-1 pipe
Carb ( i love S&S carbs)
ignition
cam change.

Best of luck Travis

That's why I'm asking.....I thought about earplugs but was concerned I wouldn't be able to hear other issues like police, engine noise, etc...... I love a loud bike and mine has samson bg3. My head would ring for 2 hours after running all day..LOL I am very happy with the bike and would just like to gain a little on top end and not lose my torque. Cheap is good. Keep throwing the comments to me guys. All are appreciated.

I posted basically the same thing over in the EVO section. To be honest I didn't even know there was an EVO section. Thanks

You risk doing serious damage to your hearing! For a little light entertainment on the subject of ear plugs read this recent thread. I just bought the 'Nonoise' ref post #45 and they work very well. The answer to your comment about not hearing stuff is also addressed. You will actually hear better, I've been wearing them for almost 40 years.

A Wood 6 at 10.0 cr, with some mild head work.
80-85 hp, 90-92 ft/lbs.
A 27 will be near that power also.
Another cam, other than the 6 @ 10.0 would be an Andrews #3.
Must've built 100 or more of these type of combos over the years.
Also the fuel economy will jump up.
Scott
