Found my issue, when I hit my starter button I get 12v at my starter motor wire connected to the big stud on the side. It does not spin, which tells me the motor is toast.
I have the separate starter and solenoid. To replace my starter motor do I pull the two bolts I can see, the one bolt supporting it on the transmission and it just slides out or is it necessary to pull the outer primary?

yep thats how its removed no need to remove the primary take a term off the battery just to be safe
When I see a picture of a starter motor for my bike there are two studs next to the gear on the end. are these part of the starter case or are there bolts that hold these in place inside the housing.
So all I have to do is:
1Remove the two bolts I see bolting it to the primary
2Remove the bolt that is attached to the transmission
3slide the starter motor out
So I DO need to take off the outer primary to remove the starter. Mine has the seperate solenoid an stater motor. Yes I know i need a manual, when she is running you dont think about buying one. Dr. Hess do i or do I NOT need to remove my outer primary
My Factory Shop Manual specific to your's and my bike doesn't say anything at all about pulling the primary cover off. It says disconnect the solenoid cable, bolt on the transmission, bolts or stud nuts, battery negative cable, remove the starter.
that bike the starter comes out with the one bolt under the end cover to the trans door and the 2 in the end of the starter itself it takes all of 10 min to remove and another 10 to install it -- the terminal nut for the main wire needs to come off as well
it has no power to the starter when the button is not ingaged but i would remove the battery terminal just to be safe
