Oil question
New here so this is a cross post. Just found the EVO section of this forum. My bad. Thought I might have a better chance here than in the oil section.

Hey guys new to the forum. Have an oil question. I have a 94 FLHTC. I changed the oil two weeks ago. I used all HD oil 4 quarts, filter and cleaned the screen for the lifters. Everything went as it should. I check it every couple of days and always let it warm up. However on my ride home from work today my dipstick popped out while I was gaining speed to merge on the freeway. So I pull over to see what's going on. Shut the bike off and it diesels. Notice the dipstick is out. Put it back and clean the oil off my pipes. So I get home and let it sit for about 30 minutes and check the oil. Looks like its a quart over so I take it for a ride around the block. Oil pressure is good. Get home and check the oil again. Looks like its a quart over. So I drain a Quart and check. Everything looks great on the dipstick. Going to take it to work in the morning then check the oil levels.
Has anybody experienced a situation like this or have any suggestions?

Usually this happens if you over fill the bike or your breather line is blocked.
When doing an oil change on any Harley you should put in 1/2 a quart less than the manual says and then re-check with the bike at operating temp....that means after a ride of 20 mins, not sitting idling.

4 quarts is too much. Usually the capacity is more like 3 quarts. What model is your bike? My manual says my dyna takes about 3.5 quarts, but I am lucky to get in 3 quarts. And as mentioned, the oil expands as it warms up/gets hot. YD

Make it a routine to check your oil level when you get home after a good ride while the bike is hot, it'll show higher on the stick when hot.
Only fill it to the half full on the stick, reason being,
It will lessen the oil mist carry over from the head breathers to the air cleaner, which is where the oil drip from the a/c comes from.

OP: Are you checking the oil level with the bike on the jiffy stand? Or are you checking the oil with the bike upright? The correct way to check engine oil (what my owner's manual states) is with the bike on the jiffy stand.
Did you drain the old oil with the bike upright or on the jiffy stand?

It takes four quarts. I check it and drain it on the jiffy stand. The low side of my drain plug is on the jiffy stand side. I put all four quarts in. Think I just overfilled it. Next time I will do 3.5 and see how it works out. Thanks everyone for the input.
