Evo Mods
I have a 27 in mine. When it warms up I get a little valve noise. Conventional wisdom says its ok..normal. But being kind of **** I hate it. So would a ev-23 be a bit quieter? I hate to hear my valves rattling away just so on the odd occasion I want to feel some extra pull. I mean it is a 25 year old cruiser and even with a stock cam, has the HP to weight ratio of a sports car and is plenty fast for cruising. So I guess I have a question and some advice too. Don't waste your money, hassle or time trying to make a great machine into something it is not. Been there...531 cam....ported heads, lopro valves...for power I used 1% of actual riding time and don't miss at all with just a mild build now (came with this bike....ev27, dyne single fire ign, S&S carb). Actually would rather have the stock cam and not listen to my valves getting flogged on my weekend cruiser.. But other than the little extra valve noise, all runs top notch. I think I would recommend just a mild cam and some punching of the stock baffles. From what have read and seen,,,,,Ignition, carb, air cleaner and exhaust replacements really don't do anything on a 80". Cam, better flowing exh and carb tune is what does it....the rest is just wasting money. I am no expert though. Just a guy who has had 3 evo bikes and likes to tinker with them.

The only reason to fool with exhaust is probably Sound, unless it is extremely restrictive...The Crossover from the factory is your friend!
The EV-23 is Just the pre '91 H-D Cam...I Like that one......
And I still run the OE lifters and Pushrods...so Mine is quiet as a Stocker in the Valvetrain...
There's a nice spreadsheet on nightrider that has cam specs by engine, Evo or TC and you can sort it by many different things so by intake lift or duration etc. if you're not sure what you want you can go over there and find a few that match then research what people report on them. It's worth the time to look it up instead of just going with one based on a few posts. For me valve train noise was important so I researched cams around the 27 and went 3010.
Select EVO then the sorty by however you want to compare the options.

Have Run EV-27 in Lighter bikes, and like it...I don't cut and replace the pushrods tho...I use stock pushrods and lifters, but, I replace the Cam Bearing!
My evo runs so quiet now I don't want it to sound sloppy and worn after a fresh rebuild. I guess I'll research and decide for myself which to choose instead of choosing which post to listen to, though I do appreciate everyone's help.

I went EV13. My Heritage is not as heavy as an electraglide for example. I never ride two up, as I am always alone. I know I typically don't go barreling down the interstate at 95 mph. Most roads I ride are 55 mph and less. I do sometimes take a road trip but only go the speed limit which 65 to 70 in the interstate around here. I like low end torque. I like top gear roll on and passing power. I like a quick launch from a red light. The EV13 gives me all those things and more. Yes, I have cruised at 100 mph on the interstate with it just to see what would happen. It did it just fine and still did not feel like it was running out of steam.
My valve train is not super quiet, but it is not any louder than stock. In other words, it still sounds mechanical like an Evo. The engine however does run a lot smoother and cooler. The valve timing of the EV13 is what mostly lowered the temperature. The milling of the heads slightly raised the compression and more importantly made the volumes of the heads equal. Manufacturing for a time caused considerable variation in head volume so matching them to equal volumes produces a smoother running engine.
I am a stock guy also. My 99 Softail Custom motor is all stock except for the cam bearing that I changed out at 23,000 just for piece of mind. It has plenty of power and gets good gas mileage. I do have 1-3/4" drag pipes and K&N air filter with slightly larger jets to accomidate the drag pipes. I also have small 1/2" square baffles in the pipes for low end torque and to cut the noise a little.
I have 50,000 on it now without a problem and my motor is very quiet as far as valve train noise. Of course, I am 74 years old and remember how slow my 1942 "45" flat head was. LOL
Most of my rides are below 65 mph and I just do not need the extra push. I love the way it runs and sounds. The small drag pipes are just not that noisy on a stock EVO.
But to each his own I say and many do like the extra performance of the after market cams.
