Here is a repair update.
List of thing done so far.
- Shimmed the master cylinder- I shimmed the brake lever and switch so the light doesn't stay on
- Replaced Cam Sensor - Cured the cutting out on hwy after a few miles
- Cleaned the Carb - Helped a little. Got rid of a lot of tarnish
- Replaced the fuel line - Was deteriorated
- Cleaned the interconnect harness - Got rid of possibility of shorting out
- Replaced the shocks - Wasn't all that hard once on a jack. Had to buy a new screw, washer and lock nut from Home Depot
- Removed the lowering blocks - Didn't want to damage the new(used actually) shocks
- Changed engine oil - God it was blacker than coal. Used 20w-50
- Changed the transmission fluid - This was bad too. Used 75w-90
- Changed the primary oil - Also amazingly poor in color. Used same weight engine oil
- Cleaned out the gas tank and removed built up crud - Apparently some of the liner has broken off and collected at the petcock screen.
- Cleaned petcock screen
- Added a battery tender - After some enlightenment about my battery charger and why it fries batteries. Decided to add a tender to reduce risk
- Changed and bled brake fluid - After messing with the caliper issue,I opened the bleeder screw (also did this to make reaseating pads in) and used a Mityvac to bleed them. Got the brakes to half a$$ed working. Thay aren't as hard as they was before but they work.
- Changed spark plugs - Great idea after 86ing the Splitfire and going with a standard
- Bought an owners manual - Plan to use alongside the Service manual
- Replaced the staked nut - Ok with this it's was on the fuel tank. Without pics I wouldn't be able to put in word what happened here since I don't know all the part names.
- Fixed that rotor/caliper issue that has plagued me from day 2 - Yay!!!! It's been figured out.
....This turned out to be a bent guide pin head. All I did was turned the guide pins where they was flat. All I know is it had something to do with the rivet on the pad holder and the guide pin. That was why the caliper was landing on the rotor. - Replaced the missing brake pad - Did this a long time ago after I first discovered there was a missing front pad (same caliper that gave me grief).
Part of the reason for this was the spring that held the pad was bent and not holding it in properly. However there's yet an explanation why the pad fell out completely. - Changed oil filter - Self explantory
List of things that will be done with in the next 2 months
- Replace missing screws, nuts and bolts that have vibrated loose and fell off somewhere - Ya I have yet to locktite these. I have screws missing from vibration and has fallen off on the hwy.
- Replace the bad idle cable - This is on the replace list cause the old one frayed on me
- Change fork oil - I'm still intrepid about this. Never did it before but will have to be done.
- Replace plug wires - Found nicks in old ones. I ordered a new set and should be in by this week.
- Replace the trans dipstick O ring - Its worn out and will be ordered soon (BTW what size allen is the dipstick?)
List of thing that will be done by years end
- Rewire the accessory port/cigarette lighter - Already a thread on this. I like to use the port for more than what a usb can be used for
- Clean rust off frame and fill holes with silicone - Already a thread on this too. I got rust spots on part of the frame. I plan to clean off the rust and spray paint with a can of auto paint. Then fill the one screw hole that is open with silicone.
List of things to do but have no time table set
- Rebuild/replace master cylinder - It works for now but like to to do this as a precaution considering age
- Rebuild/replace caliper - Same as master cylinder but I did found a nick on the piston boot. So since the boot is part of a kit, might as well just replace/rebuild caliper
- Upgrade shocks - I plan to try to find some used progressive shocks over time when I can afford it.
- Upgrade exhaust or baffle existing - I do have straight pipe (someone gutted one of the mufflers)on right side. It sounds awful with all the popping noise on decel. Since baffling current pipes is out of the question due to its odd size, new or used mufflers are in order or a new exhaust set.
- Repair paint - Has fine scratches all over and one large one in saddle bag.
- Repair/replace scuffed saddle bag - One of the bags has a large scrape on the bottom edge
- Replace derby cover - Ok I will say I LOATHE the one I have. it has a spider design on it and doesn't match the current theme. The other covers has HD flames on it or the HD Eagle in gold color over a chrome background.
- Replace the air filter decal - Hd Eagle design made of plastic. It has cracks in it and have to be replaced. (BTW I do not have an oem breather that belong to the bike. The one I have is a complete circle and seems to have been on another bike)
- Recover the seats - Vinyl is ripping from age
- Copy bike keys - Always good to have spares
- Replace the handlebar grips - Hate how slippery they are and the fact they are plastic. I have had to use electrical tape over the current ones to prevent slipping. I rather get ones made of solid metal with rubber over them or a combo of the 2
Wish list. Items that I like to have but can do without
- Add a different tach - Hate the tach I have its not easy to read. All it shows is bars. Like to get one that shows Numbers.
- Add a fuel gauge - Using the trip minder get old. Occasionally I forget to reset it.
So I have came a long way from where I started. Belive me It been a headache.

If you haven't done it yet check for vacuum leaks on the intake and carb seals. Mine were leaking when I got my bike.
Fork oil change is easy. I made a funnel out of a proper size hose barb and some rubber hose and a small funnel. I could then screw the funnel onto where the air fitting was. The new oil won't just pour in because the air hast to escape so I filled my funnel about 1/2 way up then lightly rocked the forks a little and the air comes out as bubbles. Measure out the new oil first and only put in that much. Without my funnel I was doing nothing but making a mess.
I like working on my old RK as I know you like working on yours. Good luck.
As for the front suspension...... It's a piece of cake. Older bike front springs will sag with age or get spongy.... disassemble clean and if you need it a little more firm you can always add an extra ounce of fluid. Rebuild seal kits are very cheap...
My list would be a long one too, now when someone ask what year I have,
I say the bodywork and frame is a 1990, you have to point to something to name the year for the rest of it.
