Son has 97 superglide , s&s super e carb, new v&h straight shots with slip ons ( not wxactly sure really but will post a pic of bike ) , stock remanufactured motor , stock ignition. He is having a hard time getting the bike to start when cold and says it is popping on decel.
The bike started fine when it had open straight pipes.
I was told that the S&S carb and V&H pipes are a very poor combination, is this true? I'm only familar with the CV carbs.
Any help would be appreciated

That's your problem right there.
Put a dynatek 2000P will make all the difference in the world starting the bike.
It did on my bike and I'm running an S&S E with Vance and Hines short shots.
As for it being a poor combination it works for me.
Those are not mufflers. Those are the competition drag pipes. They're a straight 2" drag pipe with removable baffles. The heat shields look like slip on mufflers... I have the same pipes with a stock ignition and similar set up, and the bike runs like a raped ****ing ape. Engine isn't stock though.
The pipes and carb are def not his problem unless his jetting is just way way off. Has to be an ignition issue.
Isn't popping on decel and hard cold starts too lean? I don't know about the S&S can he raise or shim the needle or increase pilot jet would be my guess.
Thanks Texas so your suggesting an ugrade on ignition, I agree. He was talking about a cam upgrade which with the bike have stock ignition and 5500 rev limiter just would work anyway.
All good points guys, I'm putting a charge on the battery right now and have the carb face stripped off to get at the adjustment screw. What jet should be in this carb ? I think I may pull the carb and as suggested check everything out , perhaps give it a cleaning and rebuild, when I hit the throttle there doesnt seem to be a real strong shot of has going in the throat.
I was thinking popping is lean.
Any reliable videos that I can do an innitial setup of the carb available?

I followed the video instructions after soaking jets in cleaning solution. Jets were 29.5 and 72. Starting much better now . I also did compression test and found front to be 135 and back to be 130, to me that sounds low.
Anyone know what the compression should be on a stock motor?

I think mine was about 150 stock but that was 8 years ago so I could be (probably am) wrong.
